Scheels Arena
Fargo, ND
ICON Architectural Group and Scheels Arena have had a working relationship for over 10 years that started with ICON designing the original arena in Fargo, North Dakota. The arena was designed to be a 160,000 s.f. multi-use facility capable of hosting a variety of events including hockey tournaments, concerts, job fairs, weddings, corporate events, conventions, rallies, and more. The arena has hosted the USA Curling National Championship, the World Junior U-18 Tournament, and NCAA hockey games. The arena is home to the Fargo Force, a Tier 1 Junior Hockey Team as well as area high school hockey teams.
The design of the arena included the implementation of many sustainable design elements including a geothermal heating system, an on-site stormwater quality system that controls and circulates rainwater, a reflective EPDM roof membrane, among other features. Because of its green design, Scheels Arena won the Green Building of America Award. Most recently, ICON designed the building addition, The Farmers Union Insurance Center, that included a second sheet of ice for practices. The additional sheet of ice allows the arena to meet the need for more ice time and allows the arena to be more flexible in hosting events and tournaments.
